A place full of history
Gamla Uppsala Högar lies just a short distance from Söderfors, north of Uppsala city, and is one of Scandinavia’s most important archaeological sites. Between 2,000 and 3,000 people from the late Iron Age rest here — the burial mounds’ silent testimony to a world utterly different from our own.
It’s not just the history that makes this place special. The landscape is also strikingly beautiful: large, well-formed mounds rise from an open plain, and there’s a lovely walking trail that winds around the burial field. If you want to combine exercise with culture, you can also follow the old railway embankment toward Uppsala city centre — roughly five kilometres through wonderful countryside.
